Green waste is the garden (organic) waste collected by your local council. It is composted and sold to farmers and
others as a soil amendment. It is a sustainable resource that is of great benefit to the agricultural industry and society.
Recently metal-detectorists and archaeologists have reported fields spread with green waste that is contaminated with metal and other
domestic waste. This could potentially damage the land and harm any grazing livestock. Green waste also has a negative impact on our
ability to identify sites of archaeological interest because any metal contaminants can interfere with metal detecting surveys and
This project, run by Archaeology and Civil Engineering at Newcastle University, will anonymously collect information on the scale
and distribution of contaminated green waste. We hope that metal detectorists, archaeologists and other interested parties will use
this app to record the level of metal and other contaminants found on fields spread with green waste during their activities.
We would also be interested to record sites with no contamination on them. This will help us to accurately calculate the
distribution of contaminated green waste.
This app is not designed for the recording of archaeological finds (and such finds are of no interest to us).
If you have any archaeological finds, you should report it to the
Portable Antiquities Scheme.
When you want to report on the status of a place, tap the New Submission link from the menu. Insert a
description and the number of contaminants you found, or leave them as zeroes if you want to report an absence of contamination.
You can include up to five photos, either new shots or images from your photo gallery, by tapping on Add Photo.
If you change your mind on a photo, you can remove it by tapping on it.
Tap Store Submission to finish up your new submission. You can decide whether to set a location for
it immediately or later.
If you decide to set a location immediately, in the following Map screen you can set a
location manually (just drag the map until you find the right location). Tap on Store Location to
pick that location for your submission. If you change your mind, just tap on Skip to postpone it.
If you make a mistake, don't worry! Just create another submission with the correct data.
Afterwards, you will be shown the Pending List screen. You can upload all of your submissions that have location data by
tapping Upload All,
and you can set a location for any pending submission by tapping on them.
It is only possible to upload submissions with location data. All uploaded data will be removed from your device after
Before entering farmland to collect this data make sure that you have permission to do so.
